Zero drop - Wide toe space - Somewhat heavier - Quite stiff and thick sole - VEGAN - WATERPROOF
Waterproof hikers with some ankle support that are lightweight? They exist! And the bonus is that legendary Lone Peak feel, with connection to the ground, comfort, and protection. Altra upgraded the waterproof upper with a no-sew overlay and 100% PFC-free recycled polyester mesh. Added loops to the lacing system for a locked-in feel and a molded heel collar for a comfortable fit.
Get comfort, flexibility, and connection to the ground in an updated midsole and feel the extra protection from an overlay cage. And you still get zero drop and Altra's roomiest toe box, including plenty of room to help your toes move more freely, and space through the midfoot. If you’re looking for a champ of a waterproof hiking boot that’s ready to kick it on any trail, we’ve got good news. You just found ‘em.
FEATURES
PETRI'S PRODUCT DESCRIPTION
Altra Lone Peak 9 WATERPROOF Mid Man is waterproof and elevated version of the basic model, the Altra Lone Peak 9+ model. You read that right, Altra's hiking shoe doesn't have a plus in its name, which is because for some reason there is no Vibram logo on the sole of the shoe, even though it looks and feels very similar in all aspects. Same sole obviously.
With this shoe, you can handle the summer downpour, autumn and spring conditions, and winter snowfalls! Unlike its predecessor, the shoe is more like a hiking shoe, i.e. not so much a running shoe. Of course, you can also run on the trail with it just fine, as long as you don't put the laces on the top too tight. The model is by no means "stiff as a hiking shoe" as Altra claims in its introduction, and the shoe only gets better when you start using it.
NOTE! You can order at least one size larger than the basic Lone Peak 9+. Removing the insole adds more volume to the shoe and, surprisingly, a little more length also. If you want to wear the shoe with thick merino wool socks and an insole, you can take up to two sizes larger than the basic Lone Peak 9+.
See also the product description of the basic Lone Peak 9+. The shoes have a lot in common, although of course the WATERPROOF 9 Mid is quite a bit heavier and stiffer, especially at the beginning.
On the scale of pure barefoot shoe - hybrid model - thick-soled barefoot shoe, I would put the Lone Peak 9 WATERPROOF Mid in the "thick-soled barefoot shoe" category.
Suitability for barefoot shoe beginners
With these shoes, you can safely get to know how the natural zero drop in the shoe affects your movement and, on the other hand, how the wide toe space frees up your toes! Depending on your own experience, you can get thinner barefoot shoes after a few months after you have used the Altras and preferably strengthened the muscles, tendons and fascia of your feet with appropriate foot training.
Suitability for experienced barefooters
Here's a great shoe to wear if hiking in the countryside appeals to you and/or for long walks in bad weather! They save your feet on hard surfaces (compare our ancestors in the forest), but still provide the same important things as real barefoot shoes in the form of zero drop and good toe space.
